Canyon View Elementary PTA Board Meeting Minutes
October 2, 2012 at 2:00 pm
Canyon View Elementary School Cafeteria

Members present: Lisa Adams, Holly Bishop, Jeannette Flynn, Cindy Grange, Karli Hedin, Helen Herd, Elan Hill, Lauren Jacobsen, Michelle Koch, Tricia Leininger, Gabriela Orozco, Heather Passey, Betty Shaw (Region 17), Brent Shaw, Roberta Smith

Reverence: Elan Hill – poem “When you thought I wasn’t looking”
Pledge – no flag – Mr Shaw said he would take care of that for the next meeting

Minutes were presented from meeting in Sept, were accepted

Membership report – currently have 93 members, membership drive started on 10/1, envelopes sent home to families, treats given for returned envelopes, class pizza party for best % participation, membership is year round, discussion of asking for donated memberships for teachers

Treasurer’s Report – given by Cindy Grange
            income from fundraiser – net income $9888.00, $2900 from sponsorship, $7386 in pledges

Open Floor Discussion:
  • report from Ms Hedin – teachers thrilled with new watch dog calendar, and expressed the appreciation of all the teachers for what PTA and volunteers are doing
  • Jeanette asked Ms Hedin what more can we do to help teachers and existing programs
  • Roberta Shaw spoke about community council and their role, getting new members elected to the board, there are more parents than staff on the council, they look at data
  • blog address – canyonviewpta.blogspot.com
  • Jeanette shared info on education commission and committee – they meet 1st mon at 9:00, reading challenge this year – Sir Shaw Silly String Strut, putting on in spring “Round the World” an ethnic art and literacy education evening working with Gabriela, EML
  • Reports on new orchestra program – meets before school, about 30 students involved
  • After school programs:  in progress or hoping to get started – bricks for kids, lego competition league, Spanish club, golf, tennis, homework help

Reverence: Elan Hill – quote from Dr Frankl “choose our own way”
Pledge – no flag in library so dispensed with the saying of the pledge

Treasurer’s Report – given by Cindy Grange
  • New Budget was presented to all members present and discussed as a proposed budget, pending outcome of the fundraiser
  • Motion by Holly Bishop to adopt present budget, 2nd by Mike Neibaur

Open Floor Discussion:
  • Question was brought up about involvement with physical fitness for the classes this year by volunteers.  Heather Passey is willing to head up the volunteers again this year.  Not planning to do Presidential fitness again – too much tracking and manhours needed.  Suggestion to teach basic sports/games and rules (ie dodgeball, kickball, baseball)
  • we need someone to be in charge of the PTA blog – Tricia Leininger volunteered to do it, Michelle Suitor will help her with existing blog set up
  • major discussion on how to improve communication within the school community, need for webmaster for school website, how to integrate the blog, facebook, twitter to get info out to all parents
  • Mike suggested to put a webcam on the school sign so we could check for info from online
  • question brought up about after school programs and what will be available
  • Discussion about when and where to have PTA meetings – evening hours were best for most present tonight, possibly meet at Whitmore library in the evening
  • parents new to the school are wondering what is expected of them and how can they get involved and what exactly is there to be involved in.  Suggestion was made to have an open house forum at the next PTA meeting to explain what PTA does
  • discussion about our great crossing guard Shirley and what can we do to thank her/help her feel appreciated

Brighton Community Council Meeting

There is a Brighton High School community meeting tomorrow night, Wed. Sept 26th at Brighton High School.  It is in the media center.  7pm-7:30 they will discuss the grade reconfiguration and then from 7:30-8:30 there is public question/answer time.  Dr. Doty, Kevin Cromar and someone from the district will be the guests.  There may be representatives from Butler Middle and Albion as well.

Howdy!
 
    It is vision screening time again!! The office has asked for help arranging volunteers. We need 6 people- Wednesday September 26, 8:30-11:30am. If we get through the classes quickly we won't need to be there all the way until 11:30. Please let me know if you are interested and available to help out. We really appreciate your support!

Audio Visual Club ** VOLUNTEERS NEEDED **

Dr Shaw wants to get something new started! He wants to have a friday AFTERSCHOOL Audio Visual CLUB for 4th-6th grade students! The students will create a video of the weekly announcements for the whole school to watch on Monday mornings! Watch the link below to get an idea of what he has in mind!
 
 
He is looking for a few parent volunteers to head up this program. If this sounds fun to you contact the school for more information!

FUN RUN ** Volunteers Needed **

Hello Canyon View Parents and Volunteers,

Our annual fundraiser, Run, Walk, Roll & Carnival is next Friday, September 14, 4:00-7:00 p.m. The race will begin at 6:00 p.m.

In order to have another successful event, we need your help! We need volunteers with setting up, which would be the hours before the event. Help is needed during the carnival and race and finally, some volunteers at the end of the evening to clean up. We, especially, will need a few strong men to move generators for the bounce houses (set up and clean up). Please find the time slots below where we need your help.


SET UP - 10 volunteers / 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. -Strong men needed to move generators

CARNIVAL - 30 volunteers / 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. / 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. / 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. - supervising bounce houses, dunk tank, check in, silent auction.

RUN/RACE - 10 volunteers / 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

CLEAN UP - 10 volunteers / 7:15 p.m. - 8:15 p.m. -  Strong men needed to move generators.

Remember if you plan on volunteering for this or any school activities please to go https://volunteer.canyonsdistrict.org to register and be approved. Please pass this on to any other parents that may be able to help.
