In order to have another successful Run, Run, Walk, Roll & Carnival/PTA fundraiser, we need your help!

Below are the times volunteers are needed. If you're able to help, please fill out the bottom portion of this paper and have your child return it to their teacher OR you can contact Monica McKeon directly at 801-289-6282 / monicawmckeon@yahoo.com

High school students are welcome to help with face painting or the bounce houses! Thanks to all of our wonderful Canyon View Parents and volunteers!

Back to School information

Yes, it's getting to be that time!

Registration packets can will be available at the school on 16th 9am-12pm and the 17the 1pm-4pm. You will be asked to fill out all the paperwork there and hand it all in.

Back to school night is Aug 18th from 6- 7:3.0 We will meet in the cafeteria and then separate to the children's classrooms.

If you plan on volunteering again this year you will need to complete the form from the districts website for a back ground check (For more information, here is a link to the post from last year)/

Contrary to popular belief, being involved in the PTA does not have to be terribly time consuming, so even if you only have a little time to give, please consider being an active member and serving on the PTA board.

Reading the Days Away

We are starting "Reading the Days Away!" This is a PTA sponsored program to encourage READING. Currently, every student is "required" to read 15-20 minutes a night for their teachers. This program will track these minutes and hopefully, encourage even more reading.

Every month, teach er will turn in their class minute totals and they will be converted into reading 'days' (24 hrs = 1 day). Watch the board in the front hallway to see how your contribution is helping your class to reach 100 days. Any class that reaches 100 days of reading throughout the year will be invited to a special party at the end of the year. So find some good books and let the fun begin!

Reflections

It's time for the annual PTA-sponsored Reflections program at Canyon View. Run by the PTA for more than 40 years, Reflections encourages students to express themselves artistically based on a common theme. The program is a celebration of children's imagination, creativity, and self-expression. Our school's participation is an acknowledgement that we believe that creating art is a great learning experience - something that has been proven to enhance and develop intellectual, social, and physical skills.

How Reflections works:
This year's theme is "Together We Can." Students may submit original artwork that expresses this theme in any of the following art areas: Dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, visual arts, theater, and three-dimensional. Entries must be received by Tuesday, November 2. Works are then grouped according to age division and judged, and then have the possibility of advancing on to council, district, region, state, or even national levels. Reflections entry forms and official rules are available in the main office.

All Reflections participants are recognized in a special Awards Assembly on November 9. Please help your child explore the arts and their own sense of creativity and encourage their participation!

Safety Fair - Wednesday September 29th, 5:30- 7:30 pm

Families can have fun while gathering all sorts of helpful health and safety information at the annual CVE Health and Safety Fair. This year’s guests/activities/topics include:

• Unified Fire - fire safety and prevention
• Cottonwood Heights Police Department - community safety information
• DARE Officer Golletti
• McGruff the Crime Dog
• Canyons District Food Services - healthy food choices
• Spot the Tot - demonstration for vehicle safety
• Cottonwood Cyclery - helmet fitting and bike safety
• Lyse Durrant and CHRC lifeguards - Cottonwood Heights Recreation Center’s Water Safety and Learn to Swim programs
• Epic Skate team - demo of skills and safety equipment
• Sawsha Turpin of www.letstalkchildsexabuse.org - keeping an open dialogue with your children
• Poison Control – new drug trends and keeping drugs locked up
• Far East Fitness – anti-bullying and safe kid programs
• Patti Hansen - Cottonwood Heights Recreation Center’s Healthy Lifestyle program
• Utah Highway Patrol’s Officer Amy Fallows - “The Seat Belt Convincer”
• A “Safe Kids” Salt Lake County Injury Prevention Specialist - proper car seat and booster seat fitting
• Rainbow Ice - samples of sugar free snow cones

Please note that families are asked to attend this event together. It is not a child-only function.

Ribbon Week Activities September 27-October 1, 2010

During Ribbon Week, students can “dress the part” to help raise awareness of health and safety issues. Themed days include:

• Monday, September 27 - Crazy Sock Day - “Sock it to drugs!”
• Tuesday, September 28 - Sweat Pants Day – “Being drug free is ‘NO SWEAT.’”
• Wednesday, September 29 - Wear Your Shirt Backwards Day -“Turn your back on drugs and bullies.”
• Thursday, September 30 - Wear Boots Day -“Stomp out drugs!”
• Friday, October 1 - Wear Sunglasses Day - “Shade out drugs and be a cool friend.”
( Sunglasses cannot be worn in the classrooms. They are to be kept in backpacks unless the students are outdoors).


Parents, feel free to use these themed days as opportunities to start a dialogue with your children about the sometimes difficult topic of drugs.

5K Run, Walk, and Roll plus Carnival - coming up on Oct 9th

The entire community is invited to take part in our new fundraiser, the 5K Run, Walk, and Roll.

Students collect pledges/donations from family, friends, and neighbors to run, walk, or bike the 5K course. A one-mile course is available for younger kids. Parents, siblings, and community members who participate in the event pay an entry fee in lieu of collecting pledges.
More details about this event are coming soon – check your kids’ backpacks. Register through any CVE student, at the CVE office, or online at http://www.active.com/. Each registrant receives a race bag. Kids who raise over $50 get to make their own t-shirt for the race.
The route returns participants to the school, where they can then enjoy a carnival featuring games, a dunk tank, bounce houses, and more. Minimal charges apply for carnival games, activities, and food.

Donut with Dad - September 15, 7:45 in the CVE gym

Students and their dads (or someone else who’s special to them) are invited to a mini-breakfast featuring a donut and a drink. This is a great opportunity for dads to learn how they can participate in the PTA. The PTA’s new Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) program is also being kicked off at this event, offering dads yet another way to be more involved in their child’s education.

This is a popular event! Carpooling or walking is encouraged. Additional parking is allowed behind the school.
