Nov Newsletter Art

The winner of this months newsletter art is Sam, in Mrs. Mawhinneys first grade.

Congrats!

Newsletter Art

This year we have started a new contest where our students get to submit art to be used as the banner on the newsletter. Last months winning submission (the costumes) was from Olivia in Mrs. Waddoups class. We were also blessed to be able to use Kions art work depicting Happy Fall (also Mrs. Waddoups) on the second page as a break between articles. Here they are again for your enjoyment!

Each grade has a chance to participate. First grade winner will be highlighted in the Nov newsletter. Each month submissions are due on the first Monday and the PTA votes during their month meeting that Wednesday. Everyone is welcome to the PTA meetings.

Smiths Earn & Learn = free money!

Smiths gives $1,000,000 - that's right 6 zero's- to schools every year.

Every time you use your fresh values card the points are used as credit. Our schools percentage of the 1 million dollars is based on spending and purchases made by participants that have enrolled their Smiths Value Card as compared to other schools total purchases - but the enrollment expires each year. Any enrollments after 6/1/2010 will be valid until Sept of 2011. All other enrollments expired on 9/30/2010- so if you enrolled this past March - you need to re-enroll.

Points used toward Earn and Learn do not affect other points you may be earning such as fuel or photo points so there's no reason not to sign up. Better yet, make sure you are enrolled before all that Holiday shopping.

For more information pick up the Smith's flyer at school.

Now, go have fun spending!

Reading the Days Away

We are starting "Reading the Days Away!" This is a PTA sponsored program to encourage READING. Currently, every student is "required" to read 15-20 minutes a night for their teachers. This program will track these minutes and hopefully, encourage even more reading.

Every month, teach er will turn in their class minute totals and they will be converted into reading 'days' (24 hrs = 1 day). Watch the board in the front hallway to see how your contribution is helping your class to reach 100 days. Any class that reaches 100 days of reading throughout the year will be invited to a special party at the end of the year. So find some good books and let the fun begin!

Reminder - Reflections entries are due Tue - Nov 2nd.

It's time for the annual PTA-sponsored Reflections program at Canyon View. Run by the PTA for more than 40 years, Reflections encourages students to express themselves artistically based on a common theme. The program is a celebration of children's imagination, creativity, and self-expression. Our school's participation is an acknowledgement that we believe that creating art is a great learning experience - something that has been proven to enhance and develop intellectual, social, and physical skills.

How Reflections works: This year's theme is "Together We Can." Students may submit original artwork that expresses this theme in any of the following art areas: Dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, visual arts, theater, and three-dimensional. Entries must be received by Tuesday, November 2. Works are then grouped according to age division and judged, and then have the possibility of advancing on to council, district, region, state, or even national levels. Reflections entry forms and official rules are available in the main office. All Reflections participants are recognized in a special Awards Assembly on November 9.

Please help your child explore the arts and their own sense of creativity and encourage their participation! All entry and rules can be downloaded at http://www.ptareflections.org/ Please contact Allison Harbertson with any questions - 801.440.3064 or allisonharbertson@gmail.com.

Flo-Foto is happy to announce that all your photos from the Canyon View 5k are online now at Flo-Foto.com! We had professional photographers on the race course, at the carnival, and in the finish line studios. Emergency Prepardeness

Teachers are in the process of collecting materials for their classroom Emergency Preparedness Kits. In the event of an emergency in which the children have to be kept at school, the kits provide the kids with snacks, water, and first aid supplies to tide them over until they are cleared to leave. If parents can donate any items for the kits, it is greatly appreciated.
Some items needed are bottled water, peanut-free snack items, Band-Aids, alcohol swabs, antibacterial gels/ointments, rubbing alcohol, gauze, cotton balls, Q-Tips, Ace bandages, medical tape, Steri-Strips, adult-size latex gloves (or non-latex alternatives), tweezers, and cold packs. Parents need not feel that they have to provide enough for everyone; any donation is helpful. Donations must be received by the end of October.
For more details or to donate items, please contact Zully Mumford at 801.673.9257 or zstamper2000@yahoo.com.

Principal's Message from the October Newsletter

Attending School Keeps Students on Track

Students need to be in school every day to stay on track. Teachers’ lesson plans are carefully constructed to introduce new concepts, reinforce them with learning activities, and then move on to new skills and ideas. When children aren’t in school, they fall behind. The more days they miss, the harder it is to catch up. At Canyon View, we have a new math program that follows the new Common CORE Standards that have been adopted by over 70% of the states in the U.S. When students are learning to read, write, and do math, they need to be present for the lessons being taught at school so they can be successful and build foundational skills.

That’s where you come in. If you can help us by following the guidelines below, your child has a better chance of keeping up with the work he or she misses.

Report Absences to the School
Schools are required to track the attendance of every child in every classroom every day. It is essential that you always contact the school if your child is going to be late for class, will need an early dismissal, or will be absent.

Get the Work
If you know ahead of time that your child will miss class, give the teachers plenty of notice so they can provide your child with make-up work to do. Be sure that your child follows through; you need to be his or her “teacher” on those days, so be available to explain concepts or monitor the work. If your child is out unexpectedly due to illness or other reasons, in addition to contacting the school office, make arrangements with your child’s teachers to pick up a packet of work/assignments from the school. If lengthy absences are expected (surgery, for example), alert the teacher as soon as you know, and be sure to get updated assignments and work packets throughout your child’s absence.

Religious Absences
It is inevitable that some families’ important religious observances fall on school days. Let your child’s teacher know early in the year precisely which days your child is not attending or is in need of an early dismissal.

How Sick Is Too Sick?
It’s impossible to say categorically when a child should go to school or stay home. However, one typical guideline is that a child is usually fine to attend school if his or her fever is under 100°F and there is no rash, “pink eye,” nausea, or diarrhea. The decision to keep a child home from school is best made between you and your child’s health care provider. If the doctor or nurse recommends that your child stay home, find out exactly how long and on what conditions he or she can return to class (e.g., after 24 hours of antibiotics).

Faking It?
If your child is complaining of a fever, but you’re suspicious, make sure to stay in the room the entire time the child’s temperature is being taken. A child complaining of nausea is typically paler in color and slightly sweaty, and usually needs to vomit more than once. Send your child to school if you don’t see a real symptom, knowing that the school will contact you if things change. Also, be alert if your child seems to be “sick” on school days but always rebounds for the weekend.

Vacation Plans
It’s tempting to pull your kids from school for a family trip, but it’s a bad idea. Why? First, it gives your children the impression that their schooling is not your top priority. Also, when they miss class work, even if you ask for make-up work to be sent home ahead of time, they can fall behind because they’re missing many hours of instructional time each day. Instead of thinking of how you can miss the crowds by taking trips during the school year, think about what it could be costing your child in the long run.

Check Those Appointments
Schedule your kids’ doctor and dental appointments for afterschool hours or weekends unless there’s an emergency. Schedule your children’s twice-yearly dental appointment during winter and summer breaks, and schedule school physicals, immunizations, and other routine care for school holidays or summer break.

Finally, remember to show and tell your children that attendance is important - whether it’s as a child in school or as an adult on the job. You’ll be helping them succeed both in school and in life.

From the Classrooms (excerpts from the Newsletter)

Kindergarten
What a wonderful group of kindergartners! We are off to a great start and have been working hard on teaching the children about safety and school rules. We have also been teaching the kids colors; the children should now be able to identify and read each color word.
The focus for October is Columbus and fall. Math topics for the month are number sets and patterning.
Please remember to help your child write his/her name with the first letter capitalized and the rest lowercase. Let the children share their day with you and remember to look in their folders for their work and important notes and information. Don’t forget to read to them every day!
Thanks for the support you have given us so far this year, and for letting us be involved in your child’s education.
The Kindergarten team

First Grade
First grade is off to a great start. The kids are even getting good at going through the lunch line!
We want to welcome our new first grade teacher, Ms. Green. She is a wonderful teacher and we are excited to have her join our team.
First grade has an interesting field trip scheduled for October 5th: The Salt Lake County Landfill. It is fascinating to go behind the scenes at the landfill and learn all about recycling. Thank you to all of the parents who plan to help with this field trip.
Keep reading with your kids every night and keep up the great work!!
The First Grade Team

Second Grade
We’ve had a fun time getting to know our new second grade students, and the year is off to a great start.
Everybody really enjoyed Chocolate Day, when we talked about Milton Hershey, where chocolate comes from, and how it is made. Did you know that cocoa is very bitter unless you add sugar to it? We counted, sorted, graphed, added, and subtracted M&M’s. What a fun day!
We have also been talking about safety at home, in the car, on bikes, and walking to and from school. The kids learned about stranger danger and how to stay away from strangers and run for help if needed. We practiced calling 911 in an emergency. Safety comes first in second grade!
A big thank you to those who took a leaf from our giving trees; we have had many donations come in! These items are used throughout the year and make a big difference in our classrooms. Thank you so much for your support!
The Second Grade Team

Third Grade
Third grade is off to a great start here at Canyon View. Mr. Anderson, Ms. Larsen, and Mrs. Schneggenburger have been helping the third graders adjust to the routine of third grade, and everything has been going quite smoothly. In addition to math, reading, writing, and spelling, students have been learning all about self-esteem and safety. Third graders have also been introduced to keyboarding on the AlphaSmart computers.
The third graders took their Iowa Tests this month, and they did an excellent job. Keep up the great work, third graders!
All third graders are required to read 20 minutes every night. Those students who read the required minutes last month attended a fabulous reading party at the end of the month.
We are looking forward to a wonderful year!
The Third Grade Team

Fourth Grade
Fourth grade is shaping up to be the best grade ever! The students have had a lot of fun getting to know each other and have learned so much.
In math, the focus has been on rounding to the millions, place and value of numbers, expanded form, word form, and standard form. In geography, the kids have just finished learning about our amazing state of Utah and are now learning about the three regions of Utah. Fourth graders have also started going to the computer lab, and are doing fun P.E. activities and art projects.
Fourth grade is great!!!!
The Fourth Grade Team

Fifth Grade
The fifth grade is off to a fantastic start! We are happy to welcome Mrs. Freestone and Sally Goodger to fifth grade.
We have been preparing for the Garden Fair since last spring and are really impressed with all the entries. The judges had a difficult time selecting the winners. We are quite proud of our winners and all of the participants.
Fifth graders are currently studying the explorers who settled our country. In science, they are studying drugs and alcohol, healthy lifestyles, the human body, and heredity. They are also learning about the scientific method. This past month, fifth graders worked hard in math and language to get ready for the Iowa Tests. We’re all relieved to be done with that!
The kids love their first grade study buddies and really enjoy helping them with their reading. Our students are currently enjoying PE with Mrs. Roberts, music with Mrs. Freestone, art with Mrs. K., and computers with Mrs. O. The kids also seem to like having the Web sites where they can go and get information about their assignments from their teachers.
As we look forward to October, we hope to raise lots of money for our Fun Run fund raiser and we’re thinking about what we are going to be for Halloween. We are busy and excited about fifth grade!
The Fifth Grade Team

Sixth Grade
We have been busy, busy, busy in the sixth grade and can’t believe it is already the second month of school. The kids have been working extremely hard learning our new math program. The first topic that we covered was numeration. This included place value, comparing and ordering whole numbers, exponents, and algebra connections. The second topic introduced students to algebra.
In P.E., the children had fun participating in a four-square tournament. It involved quick hands and quicker feet. The students didn’t realize that four-square could be so challenging!
As the students rotated through the three sixth-grade classes, they were exposed to a variety of subjects. Mrs. Sunderland introduced them to good and bad microbes, Mrs. Skrocke shared her knowledge of Ancient Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt, and Ms. Joko had them involved in descriptive writing and knowing the difference between a “vanilla” word and a “Baskin Robbins” word.
This month, sixth graders turn their focus to biographies. Not only will they write a biography about a classmate, but they will also read a biography about a famous person and prepare a speech about that person. On October 28, each child dresses up as the famous person they read about, marches in the school’s Halloween parade, and then returns to the classroom to present their speech. Parents are invited to listen to the speeches. We hope you can join us for this fun day!
The Sixth Grade Team

Media News
Welcome back one and all! The Media Center is looking forward to a very exciting year. In addition to What’s on the Menu, Trivia, Book Talks, Candy Land, Student Displays, Beehive Reports, and Lessons, we will be adding Did You Know and W.W.W. = Weekly Wise Words. Wow, that is quite a list! We also have some awesome new books to add to our shelves.

We are in need of a little help on Thursdays to stock the shelves with library books. Parents can help with this any time of the day, and for any amount of time. Please stop by the library to let us know if you are interested.

We are also looking for a parent to head up the “Birthday Book for the Library” program. In this program, a letter goes home with each child during the month of his/her birthday. The letter invites them to buy a book for the school library. Once the book comes in, the child’s name is placed in the book and the child gets to be the first one to check the book out of the library. This is a great program that encourages reading, recognizes the child's birthday, and builds the book selection in the library. If you are interested in heading up this program, please contact Jenn Searle at 801-943-5182.

See you in the Library!
- CC&CC
P.S. Did you know that August 2010 had five Sundays, five Mondays, and five Tuesdays? This won’t happen again for another 826 years!

Still time to sign up for PTA - Membership drive

Just a reminder that this is the last week for our PTA membership drive. Please return your $5.00 membership envelope with your child. Each individual membership is $5.00 and we encourage moms and dads to both join. It is important to join the PTA and help support all of the extra programs that are provided by our school's PTA. Even if you don't have time to volunteer at the school or with the extra programs put on by the PTA, just joining the PTA helps your child.
Remember, the 2 classes with the most members joining during our membership drive will receive free shake coupons from Arctic Circle. We will be counting those envelopes for the classes through this Friday, October 1. You can join the PTA at any time during the school year

The entire community is invited to take part in our new fundraiser, the 5K Run, Walk, and Roll.

Students collect pledges/donations from family, friends, and neighbors to run, walk, or bike the 5K course. A one-mile course is available for younger kids. Parents, siblings, and community members who participate in the event pay an entry fee in lieu of collecting pledges.
More details about this event are coming soon – check your kids’ backpacks. Register through any CVE student, at the CVE office, or online at http://www.active.com/. Each registrant receives a race bag. Kids who raise over $50 get to make their own t-shirt for the race.

Classroom Helpers Meeting - September 10, 2-3:00 pm in the gym

Anyone who is interested in helping in their child’s classroom should attend this event. Classroom helpers assist teachers at various times throughout the year with things such as classroom holiday parties, field day, and special class projects.

Children are welcome at this meeting, and refreshments are served. Those who cannot attend this meeting but would still like to assist in the classroom should fill out a form (look for it in your kids’ backpack) and return it to your child’s teacher.

Please remember if you want to volunteer the district requires you register as well. You should be able to click the link below to register.

Life Lessons

Our PTA president read us this quiz at our last meeting. It makes it easy to see how the "little" people matter. YOU can make a huge difference.

Take the following quiz.
You don’t need a pen, pencil or paper.

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America Contest.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for Best Actor and Actress.
6. Name the last decade’s worth of World Series Winners.

How did you do?

THE LESSON

NONE of us remembers the headlines of yesterday.
There are no second-rate achievers on the above quiz.
They are the best in their fields.
But the applause dies.
Awards tarnish.
Achievements are forgotten.
Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Now here’s another quiz.
See how you do on this one:

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.
6. Name a half dozen heroes whose stories have inspired you.

Wasn’t that a lot easier?

THE LESSON

The people who make a difference in your life aren’t the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They’re the ones who care enough to spend personal time and effort for you.

If you are interested in volunteering the classroom helpers meeting is this Friday - September 10 from 2-3:00 in the gym (more info to come). It doesn't have to be a scary huge time commitment either. Sometimes a hour at lunch or before work just once week or twice a month can really help. Stop by and see how you can make a difference in a child's life.

Volunteers

If you enjoy working with students or in a school setting, Canyons View Elementary has many opportunities to become involved. The needs are great and the possibilities are almost endless. For most positions, there is no experience necessary and no special skills are required. Simply a willingness to help will qualify you for many jobs. For busy working parents, please don't let your schedule deter you. There are some opportunities that can be done on a lunch break or before or after school/work. If you are willing and want to help, just ask :)

A list of general needs available at elementary schools is included below to assist you in making a decision about where you would prefer to be placed. In accordance with the new district policy, all volunteers must be registered. Following the completion of your application you will be contacted about potential assignments to volunteer positions. Your work will be supervised and directed by district employees.

Introduction to the PTA

We’re excited to introduce ourselves to you as Canyon View’s PTA Executive Board for the 2010-2011 school year! The Utah PTA’s theme this year is “Celebrate Children”, and we are anxious to celebrate the children at Canyon View with you during this coming year. In fact, we are so excited about serving the children at Canyon View that three of us spent two days in Provo at the Utah State PTA convention, where we learned about many wonderful programs and resources available to our school through the PTA. We already have been busy planning how best to “Celebrate Children” at Canyon View, and we believe we can benefit our children most by focusing a lot of our efforts in the two essential areas of Education and Community.

Enriching Your Child’s Education
From the State PTA convention, we have become aware of a number of activities and programs that can enhance the educational experience of our students. We want to review and continue the valuable educational programs that the PTA already provides at our school, as well as add new programs to further enrich our students’ educational experiences. Obviously, input from our teachers will be essential in identifying the most needed and effective types of programs for our students.

Enhancing Canyon View’s Sense of Community
We are committed to further developing the sense of community at Canyon View and ensuring that this sense of community is available to all families who desire it. We are discussing ways to increase school spirit and pride among students and increase the warmth and sense of inclusion among parents, families, and staff. We plan to improve communication within the PTA by adding new and improving existing communication channels. In fact, we would love to receive your ideas, comments and questions at our new e-mail address at ptacanyonview@gmail.com or visit the Canyon View PTA facebook page.

We plan to reach out to more working parents (including dads!) by holding some evening meetings and to new families and parents who haven’t previously been involved with PTA. We want all Canyon View families to feel a sense of belonging and pride from having a child at Canyon View. Additionally, we are exploring ways of managing volunteers, so that each volunteer has a friendly and valuable experience helping at Canyon View, without feeling overburdened.

We also are planning some fun, community-building events, one of which will be our Fall 2010 fundraising event. Did you realize that the PTA is allowed only one fundraising event per school year? Through this one event, we must generate all of the money we will need to finance these important programs for the entire school year! Many of you have indicated previously that you prefer to make a financial contribution in lieu of fundraising, and you will have that option. Additionally, as a non-profit, charitable organization, your donations to “Canyon View PTA” are tax deductible, and we ask you to consider making donations to our PTA now and throughout the year to support our school.

Next Steps
As you may know from previous years, the PTA conducts an annual survey to help identify areas of concern you have about our school and community. We have attached the 2010-11 PTA Survey and ask that you please fill it out for your family and return it with your child next week.

We look forward to getting to know you as we work together to “Celebrate Children” at Canyon View by making 2010-2011 a great year of learning and increased connection. You can get involved by contacting us at our ptacanyonview@gmail.com address, Canyon View PTA facebook page, our individual contact information below, or our registration table at the School Open House in August. PTA membership is a great value at only $5.00 per person and benefits not only Canyon View’s PTA and students, but also the National and State PTAs as well. For more PTA information see the National
PTA at www.pta.org or the Utah PTA at www.utahpta.org.
